Saums Interiors - Celebrating 50 Years in Business

SAUMS INTERIORS LAUNCHES

INSPIRED BY THEIR COUSIN
FRENCH MODERNIST PAINTER
PIERRE BONNARD

A burst of golden blossoms, a Riviera sky, the terra cotta shades of the Provencal earth or the rich red of merlot.  A glass of Pernod.  White caps on the Mediterranean.  These images of the French coast and countryside inform the works of artist Pierre Bonnard and now are showcased in the new line of customized colors, The Pierre Bonnard Paint Collection by Saums Interiors.

A  family business with ties to the fabled French artist, Saums Interiors is celebrating its 50th anniversary with the introduction of this unique new line, inspired by the works of Pierre Bonnard.  The artist was second cousin to the late Robert Saums, who founded the business with his wife Wanda in 1957.  The company grew from a mom and pop paint store in Hopewell to become a full service interior design center still owned and operated by the Saums family.

The Pierre Bonnard Paint Collection by Saums Interiors consists of 12 colors developed by Vice President and Creative Director Sharon Saums and her niece, Jennifer Dagert.  Sharon Saums manages the paint department, where, using top-quality Benjamin Moore paints, she creates custom stains and custom colors for Saums clients.

"Bonnard's palette is both bold and subtle," says Sharon, who spent months mixing shades inspired by a patch of sky, a red rooftop or the pale green of an aperitif. "His color combinations are still considered very daring," she notes. "But these colors can appeal to both traditionalists and those who take a bolder approach."

The new line is available from October 5th only at Saums Interiors Paint Department.  The colors are available in matte finish only and are priced at $17.99 per quart and $55 per gallon, according to Eileen Saums McCandlish, who now heads the firm as President and Chief Visionary Officer   "We plan to do another collection in the spring," she says. "There's no dearth of inspiration," she asserts, noting that her famous cousin, who died in 1947 at the age of 79, was highly prolific.

Interior designer Kimberley Slater has chosen a variety of fine fabrics to compliment the new colors in exquisite shades of blue, burgundy, gold, orange and green. "The paints and the patterns we have chosen will work in both traditional and modern rooms," she notes.

THE PIERRE BONNARD PAINT COLLECTION BY SAUMS
AND THE WORKS THAT INSPIRED IT

The 12 colors are drawn from many of Pierre Bonnard's most vibrant and evocative works.  The artist is celebrated for his use of color and complex forms. The vivid blues, sunlit yellows, ochre and burnt orange that mark his paintings are evident in the interior designs that Saums has created for some of New Jersey's finest homes.  Bonnard painted many beautiful interiors - kitchens, baths and dining rooms, populated with friends and family members.

Clients can also purchase posters of these works and Saums will help to find a frame that compliments individual décor.  Saums' interior designers can suggest fabrics for drapes, upholstery and accent pieces that will compliment the Bonnard colors throughout the room.

The new paint collection marks another step in the growth of Saums Interiors. "We've just begun to explore the potential of the Bonnard line," says Eileen Saums McCandlish   There are still countless color possibilities in the work of their famous relative, not just in paint, but window treatments, carpets and upholstery.  Bonnard's prints, stained glass and inventive forms are also a source of inspiration.

Three generations of the Saums family lent their creativity and expertise to this project, and the entire Saums interior design staff is ready to provide expert advice in using these exciting colors to create a beautiful and unique interior for each client. Says Eileen Saums McCandlish, "We are beginning our next 50 years with homage to a rich family tradition and a creative vision to carry us forward. Our cousin Pierre was a leader and an innovator who loved beautiful interiors, color and light. The Saums family is truly fortunate to have such an inspiration and talented people to carry it out."

The new Pierre Bonnard Paint Collection by Saums is on display at Saums Interiors Showroom throughout October, the firm's anniversary month. The paint can be purchased at the paint department and color consultations are available by appointment.  For more information, access the Saums Interiors website, www.saums.com or call 609-466-0479.

PIERRE BONNARD
1867-1947

After viewing a 1930 exhibition of Bonnard's paintings, his friend and colleague, Henri Matisse, told collector Duncan Phillips,"Bonnard is the greatest among us." But despite critical acclaim and comparisons to Matisse, Renoir and Mondrian, Bonnard is perhaps less known to modern audiences because his work is not as easily characterized as that of the Impressionists, Cubists and other movements in 19th and 20th century art.

His influence and reputation continued to grow, however, and Bonnard is considered one of the great colorists of modern art.  His work spans paintings, prints, book illustrations, stage sets, and decorative arts, including works in stained glass.

Bonnard was a member of a group of artists called the Nabi, the Hebrew word for prophet, and was one of the leaders of the Intimist school of painting, an exploration of the domestic interior.  Bonnard's use of color conveys the warmth and comfort of home, with sunlit interiors looking out on country scenes.

As his interest in landscape painting grew, his work captured the rustic beauty of northern France and later, when he moved to the South, the sun, sky and Mediterranean waters of the Riviera.  Bonnard moved to Le Cannet in 1925 with his wife and model Maria Boursin.  His paintings of his garden and the surrounding region inspired many of the vibrant shades and subtle hues of and exciting new concept in color.

Bonnard's American relatives, the Saums family, are celebrating 50 years of fine interior design with this homage to their cousin, a unique new line of paints - The Pierre Bonnard Paint Collection by Saums Interiors.
